Many companies hire specific employees to control their social media sites. Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube, just to name a few, are among these social media sites where thoughts, ideas and comments can be shared among friends, coworkers, customers and clients. By posting relevant and important content daily or even weekly can sometimes be a difficult task. Content can be found within the company and within the industry; however, the same content over and over again, can be become very repetitive and sometimes boring.

After reading blog after blog and article after article trying to find relevant information that won’t bore an audience, Pinterest came alive. Pinterest is a virtual board where people and companies can post different likes, dislikes, products, recipes, clothes and more. Each individual or company creates “boards” separating their categories to include whatever they wish. For example, many people using Pinterest for personal use may have a separate board filled with their favourite recipes. Others may have their own board with their favourite quotes. How to pin these to your boards is quite easy.

If you are searching online and come across a delicious recipe you would like to try, you can “pin” the link to your board. By adding the “pin it” button to your internet bar, it’s simple and easy! When you’re on the site you want to pin, you click your pin it button and it will grab all of the images it finds off that site and then you choose the image you want to show. Then, choose the board you want to pin it to, and there you go! It’s that easy.

As Pinterest burst into the social media world, companies began to look more closely at this new way of communicating. It gives businesses an opportunity to group their products and/or services together under categories in one place. Where their website can do the same thing, Pinterest allows you to create boards based on the target audience the individual or company wants to approach.

For example, being a custom packaging company, Gunther Mele has taken the initiative and has created a Pinterest account to create these new boards to target their audiences. By colour blocking products, we are able to create boards that are focused on one specific colour. If a customer is looking for only blue packaging because their colours are blue, they can go to our “Beautiful Blue” board and look at the products we carry that are anywhere from light blue to navy blue. We have also created boards for specific occasions such as “Let’s Celebrate”, “Wedding Bells” and “It’s a Boy! It’s a Girl!”. Pinterest not only has given us the ability to create these special boards to bring our products together, but it’s fun!

While thinking and researching content for Facebook and Twitter can become difficult sometimes, Pinterest is where people can escape to by pinning their products while searching other ideas. It’s well organized but completely open to your imagination!
